Two metal cylinders (19) with opposing annular grooves are rotated to separate biomass thistle into two halves that expose a core area to obtain devoid of a bone cortex to be used as cellulosic feedstock. A range hood (14) separates thistle burr hairs in cyclones (15, 16).
