The invention in question relates to a method of identifying compounds that give rise to or inhibit endoplasmic reticulum stress or oxidative stress. Said method is based on the transformation of cells, stably, with a vector which expresses a reporter gene under the control of the DDIT3 (also called CHOP) gene promoter. This promoter comprises nucleotides -1626 to +60 of said gene, there being two variants thereof: -1507 C/G. While variant -1507 C is not activated under oxidative stress conditions, -1507 G readily responds to this stimulus. Furthermore, both promoters are activated under endoplasmic reticulum stress conditions, or in situations where both conditions are combined.
