The invention relates to a method and system for the automatic generation of geodata metadata, in which at least one URI is known, said URI containing precise data for accessing the geodata. The method comprises the following steps consisting of: accessing the geodata and extracting metadata stored therein; obtaining the coordinate reference system; calculating the geographical extension based on the reference system and the extracted coordinates; determining representative place names for the geographical frame; determining the category of the geodata from the extracted information and the stored knowledge; identifying keywords that identify the content; generating a title that describes the data; generating an image of the geodata; deducing the data model and expressing same in UML and as an application schema; generating an image of the data model; incorporating the metadata into an XML archive, structuring the archives and compressing same.
