The intermediate band semiconductor (1) is located between an n-type and a p-type semiconductor (3, 4) layer without an intermediate band, both of these layers separating the semiconductor from the electrical contacts used to remove current. A photovoltaic solar cell containing a semiconductor with an intermediate band (2) contains a semiconductor with an energy band located in an intermediate position between the valency and conductance bands (8, 9), and between two standard semiconductor layers without an intermediate band. One of the standard semiconductors is of the n-type and the other is of the p-type, and these two semiconductors separate the semiconductor with the intermediate band from the electrical contacts used to extract current in the cell. Photons (5) from the sunlight shift electrons from the valency band (8) into the conductance band (9), and vice versa, generating an electric current that exits on the p side and returns via the n side.
