Resumen
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compounds in high yield by carrying out a dehydrating reaction of a heavy residue obtained by oxidizing ethylbenzene, epoxidizing the oxidation product and then washing the resultant epoxidation product with an alkali and containing Na and other metals in the presence of a specific amount of an inorganic strong acidic catalyst under conditions of a specified temperature under a specific pressure. SOLUTION: Ethylbenzene hydroperoxide obtained by oxidizing ethylbenzene is used to epoxidize propylene. Thereby, propylene oxide and 1-phenylethanol are produced. The resultant epoxidation product is subsequently washed with an alkali and distilled to separate the propylene oxide, an excessive amount of the ethylbenzene and the 1-phenylethanol. A heavy residue prepared by the washing with the alkali and containing sodium and other metals is then subjected to a dehydrating reaction in the presence of an inorganic strong acid at 150-250 deg.C temperature under a lower pressure than the atmospheric pressure, preferably 50-400 mmHg to afford styrene and 2-phenylethanol.
