The present invention relates to a shape memory alloy-based actuator for lifting loads (2) that has a first cylinder (3) and a second cylinder (4) connected to each other, the cylinders each having a plurality of shape memory alloy fibres (9), and heating means for heating the fibres (9). The first cylinder (3) has a base end (5) to be secured to a fixed surface, as well as a connection end (6); and the second cylinder (4) has a fastening end (7) for fastening the load (2), as well as a connection end (6). The actuator (1) also has a variable force and/or displacement multiplier (8) connecting the two cylinders (3, 4), for adjusting the final displacement of the actuator (1) or the force exerted by said actuator (1).
